Turtle Islands Park is located 40 km north of Sandakan in the Sulu Sea of Sabah's east coast. It covers 1740 hectares, including three islands Selingan Island, Small Bakkungan Island, and Gulisan Island, together with the surrounding sea and reefs.
These islands are the islands especially in the east-south Asia where turtles nest on land and beaches. These turtles usually lay their eggs at night after 8 o'clock when the water subside. At that time you can see land and turtle that dig holes in the sand and lay their eggs into it.
Turtles that nest on the island is 83% of 'Green Turtles' and 17% 'Hawksbill Turtles'. Most of the 'Green Turtles' nesting on the Selingan Island while most 'Hawksbill Turtles' nesting on the Gulisan Island, because there is extensive coral reefs in the area. While a few of both types of turtles nesting on the Small Bakkungan Island. These turtles lay eggs throughout the year, but lay the peak it was in July to October for the 'Green Turtles' which lay about 110 eggs in a hole and February to April for 'Hawksbill Turtles' which lay between 70 and 180 eggs at all.
The eggs take 50-60 days to hatch into turtles and swim back to sea. In the research, female turtles will return to spawn after 20 years and will again lay the next few years.
